Shop, Shop 'til you Drop
03.01.04 (5:21 am)   [edit]
Ben arrived on Saturday morning and a slightly hung over Geoffrey and a slightly jetlagged Ben decided to spend our time shopping.

One of the problems with not being somewhere for 3 years is that things change. When it was time to shop on Saturday, there were two places I wanted to go - Marks & Spencer and Virgin Records - both of which are no longer in Amsterdam. Damn.

The Virgin Records was to fulfill a quest given to me by Gilbert to find current fashionable Dutch DJs. I did find two CDs for him. I called him to play a little of the music, but I was disappointed that he already knew both DJs. I was hoping to be hailed as the Discoverer of New Music. I guess I’ll be happy with supplying new music from known artists. Perhaps I’ll have to look again while I’m here and see if I can come up with something really New and Original.

We also did all the Standard Things To Do In Amsterdam – bought Hard Rock t-shirts, browsed around in a sex shop, bought flower bulbs and post cards, and try on clothing not designed for 40-ish yo American men. It was a pretty fun day, but my feet were worn down to bloody stumps by the time we were finished…

The Whores of Amsterdam, part II
03.01.04 (5:01 am)   [edit]
The Alcohol portion of my Friday took place in a little gay bar called Casa Maria. It’s a nice little pub and I’ve always seemed to meet someone willing to have a conversation with a foreigner there. This time I met a group of 3 guys that I ended up spending all evening drinking with. We laughed and had a lot of fun and, best of all, since it was the Geoffrey Day Holiday Weekend, they bought most of my beer. I spent maybe 9 euros and had lots and lots of beer.

One of the guys, Christian, seemed to want to offer me a more intimate birthday present. (he was being really flirtatious and rubbed my leg a few times…) Since he didn’t directly offer I didn’t have to accept or decline so I was able to ignore it and just chalk it up as flattery. My official decision on it – now that I’m sober – is that he was interested and being come on to is a nice present all by itself.

I really didn’t feel all that drunk when I headed back to the hotel, but the only reason I woke up the next morning was a car horn fight on the street below my window… Another snowy Dutch morning.

I spent the Geoffrey Day Holiday Weekend in Amsterdam. I got to my hotel about 5:00pm Friday evening. It would have been sooner, but after I turned in my rental car the taxi driver I had to take took a scenic route to get me there – maybe he wasn’t trying to screw me over, but he was really seeming to enjoy our conversation about traveling and making fun of tourists… I guess I just have to stop being so charming and delightful. (I know, and I need to work on my poor self–esteem problems, too)

That gave me just enough time to do a little shopping before the insanely early closing times in Europe.

I was wandering through the city in the early evening before hitting any bars when some chick started talking to me. I should have known why – I was close to the red light district after all – but I didn’t clue in until she asked me if I was looking for a woman. I told her I was gay so no thank you. She replied with a, “Well, that’s bad. No, it’s good for you. Bad for me. Do you want any Ecstasy?”

Hmmm, party favors... But should one really buy drugs along side a canal from a whore in Amsterdam? What would Miss Manners say?

It's Freezing in Here!
03.01.04 (3:28 am)   [edit]
I know I’m being stupid, but I expected it to be colder in Holland than in Texas – just not cold enough to snow. It’s snowed everyday so far. The big fluffy kind of flakes too – not that itty-bitty stuff we get in Texas. I guess it’s pretty enough so I’m not really complaining – I just wasn’t expecting it.

Most of the first week here was pretty uneventful. How much adventure can one have in a small town in the dead of winter anyway? The work part drug on and on. It was a typical Swedish week of meetings – taking far too much time to have workshop to plan for the workshop. I’m in a foreign accented Dilbert cartoon.

On the Road to Holland
03.01.04 (3:23 am)   [edit]
The actual fight from Dallas to Frankfurt went without a hitch. Before I got there, though, I had to go through Security. I forgot that I had a little dental pick in my computer bag – it’s just a pick disguised as a ballpoint pen. The x-ray guy saw it and he and another security guy got into a discussion over whether or not it counts as a dangerous object like nail files.

Eventually the supervisor looked at it and something about cleaning teeth and they let it through – so I actually get to have my toothpick this trip. To be safe I guess I’ll have to pack it in my suitcase on the way home.

The plane was only half full so I had a little room to spread out once we got in the air. At first I was in an exit row, but I was sitting next to some preacher guy that not only wanted to review his sermon but to run it past me … I got up and moved to an empty aisle as soon as possible.

So much to say, so little access

All About Geoffrey Snyder

I am a 40yo guy living in Dallas, Texas with my partner of 18 years, Gilbert, and our puppy, Rex. I'm both a fun loving, happy guy in my everyday life and a loud mouthed Progressive.

I love to travel and meet people. My goal in life is to go everywhere and meet everyone.

So, pull up a chair, make yourself at home, enjoy my mental wanderings and feel free to drop me a line to tell me what you think...
