While You Were Out Weekend
04.23.04 (11:28 am)   [edit]
(yet another story to catch up on my frantic Travelling-not-blogging period)

I’m not even sure anymore how it all started. I think my friend Anthony and I were talking about what to do for my first weekend home. I had just returned home from Holland the previous Saturday night and Gilbert left on a business trip the following Tuesday morning.

At one point I thought it would be fun to paint the living room to surprise him when he got home. I think one of the other guys in the office overheard us at that point and said that it would be like the show “While You Were Out”. Never one to turn down a chance to spontaneously overdo something, I immediately jumped on the idea.

I picked new wall colors (a deep red and a mustard), bought new wall art, throw pillows, a comfy lounge chair and table and made plans for a high-speed room makeover. Saturday morning Anthony and his partner, Tony, came over and we painted and joked and danced to Cher (there’s video evidence) for about 10 hours.

They came back Sunday morning for some touch ups and a little furniture placement-by-committee. We re-arranged and swapped out existing bric-a-brac and added saris as additional window treatments. (Now, anyone – who isn’t actually Indian – that just happens to have a spare sari for decorating purposes has to be gay)

I wasn’t sure that Gilbert actually liked it at first, but he had been complaining for months that the living room was too bland. Now it’s anything but.

Ucky!!!
04.23.04 (10:40 am)   [edit]
Yesterday afternoon I was sitting in the backyard playing with the puppy. He was on the other side of the yard when he grabbed a ball, ran over to me and started to jump up onto my lap. (keep in mind that he’s a Labrador Retriever and has apparently spent too much time watching the kitty cuddle me)

He must have hit my leg just right cuz as soon as he ran into it, the ball was spit out of his mouth and he barfed on my stomach. The look on his face as he did it was just too preposterous not to laugh…. He was just stunned J

But, no matter how funny I thought it was, I was still covered in puppy puke. I wonder if the universe is trying to pay me back for something?

Get Me Out of This Asylum
04.22.04 (8:53 am)   [edit]
The last two weeks I spent in Holland were pretty uneventful from a personal life perspective. We didn’t do much beyond going to dinner each night then relaxing in our ugly hotel rooms. (Of course, that part got more fun after we found the local liquor store)

From a work perspective it was a nightmare. No one is interested in the actual details, I’m sure, so I won’t go into them. Suffice to say that the whole reason we were sent on this trip was to get all the process requirements for the project and then recommend an IT landscape to best accommodate it.

Little did we know that the locals had already decided what the landscape was going to look like and how the different applications would be used. They didn’t care if their solution was efficient – or if it could be used anywhere else in the world (after all, this was only the pilot for a global landscape).

It was awful. Ben and I decided even before the first day to do a good-cop, bad-cop strategy (I was bad-cop) but they weren’t interested in anything but making sure they got their way in every particular.

That’s my Holland story and I’m sticking to it.

AARGH!!

Good Grief, Charlie Brown. So I’ve been away. shoot me, already.

My fun little header that worked so well in February is now all stretched and blurry. I don’t know what changed, but I’ll have to take some time and try and fix it - or make a new one …

I've Been a Bad Boy
04.20.04 (1:59 pm)   [edit]
I’ve been a very bad boy. It’s been a month and a half since I’ve written anything in this blog. In that time I finished out my last two weeks in Holland and returned home to have a week to prepare for the next project. Then, I was off to Mexico City for a week and a half of hard, hard work. I came home, scrambled for a few days before leaving again to go to Houston with Gilbert and some friends for my first circuit party.

The day after we got back I was on a plane back to Mexico City. I was only there about a day and a half when I broke a tooth. I took the next available flight home, had a surprise root canal followed by a couple days on painkillers followed up by a couple days fighting a fever that I picked up while in Mexico.

AND somewhere in the middle I found the time to do a surprise redecoration of our main living room while Gilbert was out of town… It’s been a very busy few weeks and that doesn’t even count the time used to follow the horrible screw-up of an occupation in Iraq or the 9-11 commission or the election. But, I digress. I’m now going to try and catch up my stories so I’ll be able to more easily write in real-time.
