I do not Support our Troops
08.11.05 (5:25 pm)   [edit]

Common wisdom in some circles has is that if someone does not approve of the war in Iraq, then one does not support the men and women fighting there.  Following that logic, then I do not support our troops.

But what does that mean when someone says I don’t support them?  My brother is over there.  Does this mean that I do not worry about him being stationed just outside Baghdad?  Does it mean that I hope that he and his comrades come to harm?

From looking around here in balmy Dallas, Texas, it appears that supporting the troops means that I have a yellow metallic sticker on my vehicle.  It appears to me to be a catch phrase to mean that I support the President’s policies in his struggle with violent extremism.  If that is the case, then I do not support our troops.  I didn’t support the troops before the war started and they said that they had proof of these weapons of mass destruction aimed at US cities.  I did not support the troops when they tried to link Saddam Hussein to 911.  I didn’t support the troops when they glibly said that freedom was messy.  I didn’t support the troops when their response to the escalating violence was, “Bring ‘em on!”

I show my lack of support by advocating their swift return from Iraq.  I show my lack of support by wanting them to have the armor they need for protection.  I show my lack of support by opposing the cover-ups surrounding prisoner abuses and ‘special renditions’ that are doing so much to worsen our already horrible image overseas.  I show my lack of support by insisting that the freedoms they are supposedly protecting don’t erode any further.

I must be a terrible person.  I obviously hate this country and should probably leave – who else but an unpatriotic hater would want this country to live up to it’s noble ideas?

Our own people don't want pollution, Atrocity around Oil*Region is being undermined by Jihadists! Are YOU just going sit around and see until OIL*PRICES HIKE UP TO SO THAT ALL YOUR HARD EARNED MONIE$ WILL ALL GO TO INFLATED*OIL REICE, EH? ok, first of all, unlike alot of war supporters, I don't drive a gas guzzling monster. Secondly, if bin Ladin is Saudi then why didn't we invade Saudi Arabia instead? and since when has al qaida wanted to control an oil embargo? stop making things up.

First off, I really love the sarcasm in your post. But, you have to be careful of the neo-cons taking you at your word. They'll start writing blogs with little bits and pieces clipped from your post "proving" that liberals hate our troops and our country.

Isn't it strange that those yellow ribbons seem to be on the back of most SUVs. The conection is clearly the oil. Cheep oil means cheap gasoline for big cars. The War in Iraq is a promiss for a big oil supply from a friendly country in the oil rich Middle East.

Keep on blogging!

For shame. Iraq is about 911 ... I mean WMD .. I mean overthrowing tyrants .. I mean spreading Democracy ... I mean fighting terrorists there instead of here .... I mean .....

It's about anything but Oil - George told me so.

Wrong? How so? Is it my interpretation of the meaning behind the phrase or is it my belief that the war itself is wrong?

Opposition to America's involvment in the war in Iraq can be a thoughtful, and even properly moral position. If you have considered the matter carefully, and if what you express comes from deep within your heart, and if your position is expressed with reason and consistency, then I commend you. You are not "wrong". I used the wrong word.

I have no right to judge you because of your position on this issue.

But, I disagree with you.

but again, to which part? my interpretation of the catch-phrase 'support our troops', or to my opposition to the war?

I believe your opposition to the war in Iraq is mistaken.

Like it or not, recognize it or not, we are in the midst of WWIII. There is a mass of people, organized and intent and capable, who hate us and are dedicated to our deaths. They will go to extreme means to accomplish their goal. They will not listen to reason, are not interested in dialogue, and are absolutely single-minded in their "mission". It is a mission, for they are religious zealots.

The war in Iraq is a statement: if they insist upon killing us, we will kill them first.

I hate war. I do not like the way this particular war is being conducted. It is sad that suffering is a byproduct. But it is necessary. I would go so far as to say the literal survival of millions of Americans is dependent upon it. More battles are yet to come, and it is going to get even more ugly. But, fight we must.

Re: "The war in Iraq is a statement: if they insist upon killing us, we will kill them first."

Who are these they and when did they start killing us? The Iraqis had nothing to do with 911 so it can't be that. The Iraqis didn't start killing Americans until after we invaded their country on trumped up evidence. The non-Iraqis in Iraq are opportunists and would have found a way to fight anywhere ... so apparently even if they don't insist on trying to kill us we will kill them first.

Iraq wasn't a part of this religious based conflict.... but, I guess it is now. But it never should have been. That's why I oppose the war. Maybe if we took the 300billion needed on this unnecessary invasion and used it to actually go after al Qaeda we would be much farther along on the road to resolving this war.

It's your rights to be aagainst war, perhaps America should start blaming Bill Clinton for not preventing 9/11 so that we don't even have to worry about Bush/military agenda. In a long run----we still have to negotiate, compromise, sacrifice lives, and spend more dollars either for: OIL or DEMOCRACY. dwelling on war issue doesn't help USA in keeping our troops speedy planned exit on Iraq. At the end of conflict in Iraq, our Homeland/Owverseas securities will not stop Terrorism! If we abandoned Iraq, there's more chaos here and all parts of the worlds...We are all vicitms of *PUPPETRY* by our enemies. I must remind our own people that Bin Ladin had taunted US before the 2004-election that it doesn't matter who wins; Kerry or Bush *that the terrorists networks are going to ruin US economy/morals...Oil or Democracy's sake...thanks to our own FEUDS*

"since when the has al quida wanted to control oil embargo?" answer: Oil has, had been set on fire!!!!! sabotage democracy process in Iraq, these terrorists abviously; don't care about Iraqis but their own war against Equality for all. Bush did not kill our military; Terrorism did!!!!! Our troops believed in their noble causes...it has nothing to do with Oil. It reminded our troops about *genocide in Bosnia. Bill Clinton sent our troops there, right? If military guys believed that they are helping Iraq people against atrocities; and thats their purpose and none other sarcastic*flip-flops

'Our troops believed in their noble causes...' Have you talked to these troops? have to taken a poll? Each and every one of them believes in this war? Or are you just pulling that out of the air?

And what does Bosnia have to do with anything? At least try to keep on topic.

WAR FOR OIL OR DEMOCRACY=WE ARE ALU LOSERS IF YOU ENDLESSLY BIRATING THE CAUSE OF OUR MILITARY'S SELF-SACRIFICE SO THAT YOU CAN LIVE SAFER, EH? IN DUE ISSUES,
REALITY BITES AND SPEAKING THE TRUTH DOES HURTIN' TO PEOPLE WHOSE ANTIBUSH CAUSE THEY ARE ON DENIAL!!! INSTEAD OF TACKLING THE RIGHT ISSUE IS= TO PROTECT/SUPPORT OUR TROOPS SO THAT THEY CAN BE SEND THEM HOME SOON BUT YOU GUYS ARE SO *MAD-SENSE* OVER BUSH THAT YOU'RE HELPING KILLING OUR OWN MILITARY BY *DEMORALISING THEM 'EM* ---SPEED UP THE PROCESS: JOIN THE ARMY BUDDY!!! ;) ISN'T IT *SABOTAGE* IS AN ERR/ILLNESS TOO? --FOR HATERED WITH BUSH THAT YOU WOULD RATHER HELP TERRORISTS TO KILL OUR MILITARY AND PRO-DEMOCRACY PEOPLE IN IRAQ, USA, AND THE REST OF THE WORLD...

Shows what you know. My brother is over there. I want him home and I want him home alive. There is NO good reason for us to be there - Saddam Hussein was not a threat to the US - and the people that are a threat (remember Osama bin Laden?) is running around scott free.

How am I safer when the people that actually are trying to kill Americans are free and we go around invading countries for no reason?

Don't you think that if our troops aren't in Iraq that they would be sent some where to fight terrorism? It just so happened that at least, it's a battle that they/we know what we it's cause. I have 10 and 12 year old sons wanted to join the military and I've ask them why? My boys said, " So that 9/11 attack will never happened again!"

Sorry that your scared for your brother's life. though they're fighting insurgents in Iraq under Al Queda/Jihadists organized terror network that is: I'm sure that our troops are aware that if they don't eradicate terrorism in Iraq and other parts of the world; would eventually come to our homeland and attack us. My best friend got killed fighting with pride cause he had always told me, his kids, and everybody that he had to help or do the right thing, to keep our homeland secured from enemies where ever it takes him, speaking of unwavering dedication for our safety to you and rest of us...regardless, where the battle is: our warriors lives are sacrified, they know the consequences of being in the military. Accidents, happens during military training alone that some lives ended too. Everybody hurts when there is war, of course. And your not a Bad*American, you just don't want our military gettin' killed in Iraq, eh?

Would it be wiser; for our troops and must all come back now to USA: so that Insurgents will just have to cross the border here and kill us all...???

Iraq had nothing to do with 911. Even George admitted that.

Before we invaded, there was no terrorism in Iraq to 'defend' us from ....

... and I have no idea what you meant by the external comment thing ...
